Meet Sarah Sadek — a Big Air talent from Dahab, Egypt, who’s just joined the Harlem Family. In this interview, she shares her journey into kiting, her recent podium finish at Lords of Tram, and what drew her to Harlem’s gear and crew.
Name: Sarah Sadek
Discipline: Big Air
Date of birth: 05.09.1996
Where are you from? My dad is Egyptian, and my Mom is German. I grew up in Cairo, Egypt
And where are you based now? Dahab
How/when did you get into kiting? 13 years ago, when I was 15. My brother was already windsurfing then, and my parents wanted me to learn from him. But I didn’t want to learn from him and he didn’t want to teach me. Then I saw the kiters and I told my parents I want to do that instead and so I learned.
What are your biggest achievements in kiting so far? Third place at Lords of Tram, and competing against the men at Red Bull Winds of Sinai.
Why did you decide to join the Harlem Family?
Two weeks before Lords of Tram, Victor, Harlem's Team Manager, came to Dahab for a week-long vacation. We already knew each other, so we spent some time kiting and went on a trip to the Blue Lagoon. That’s when I got to try the Thrive for the first time — it was a light wind session, but I instantly loved the kite.
At that point, my contract with my then-sponsor had come to an end, and we had decided not to renew it. So just a few days before Lords of Tram I reached out to Victor to ask if I could ride Harlem kites in the comp.
The day before the comp, I trained properly for the first time on a 6m Thrive, and the next day I competed on the 5m. My first heat was incredible — I landed my first doubles ever. The semis went even better, and I ended up going home with a third place… and a clear feeling that the Harlem Family is exactly where I want to be. Not just because the gear is next level, but because the support off the water is absolutely unreal.
What excites you about being part of the Harlem Family? Being part of the family, being in one team with Lana who I already always travel together when there is a competition.
What’s your current gearset up? 7 & 8 Harlem Thrive, Lead bar and 135 Launch board
What do you like about the gear set-up? How quick it is and the extra hangtime it has. But also, just the colours making every day a little brighter :D
What are your goals and aspirations for the future? КOTA
Favourite spot in the world: Babybay, Dahab (I’m probably the only person in the world that would call it their favourite spot)
What or who inspires you? Strong women around the world. But especially strong Arab women, we have some really cool women here in Dahab breaking records in freediving, amazing climbers, etc.
Describe yourself with 3 words: Saltlover, free, disruptive
Can you share with us a fun / curious fact about you that no one knows yet: I want to become 105 years old to live in three centuries.
